digital keysAs 2015 sails along, LockNet continues to grow at a breakneck pace which can only mean great things to come. The door and lock industry continues to progress more and more into the digital world with things such as digital keys and, while that hasn’t necessarily taken the dive into the commercial door and lock industry, it’s certainly a rapidly expanding business when it comes to personal use.

At the beginning of the year, we took a look at some of the new trends we expected to see in 2015. I have to say in true Miller form, Katie nailed it. Let’s take a look at some of the trends we really saw take hold.

Digital Keys

If you ask any member of the sales team at LockNet whether or not physical keys are dying, they’ll tell you flat out they aren’t going anywhere. However, that hasn’t stopped the industry from really pouncing on the entire smart home/smart lock idea. And what goes hand in hand with smart homes and locks? Digital keys. So, while digital keys might dominate the news right now, there’s little chance physical keys will ever die.

Electrified Locks

The Electromechanical Solutions Department continues to burst at the seams with growth. Unsurprisingly, electrified locks have increased in popularity this year. Their capabilities are virtually endless and a large majority of them can be tailored specifically to your facility’s needs. With options such as lockdown features that add increased security and allow users to integrate systems together, electrified locks continue to exceed expectations as technology advances.

Biometrics

The use of biometrics in access control absolutely fascinates me because it seems like something more suited for a sci-fi movie as opposed to a reality in the world we live in, but it’s true. Fingerprint and retina scanners are a thing of the now and only seem to be on track to increase in popularity.

One of the reasons for this is the drop in price, which makes the option of biometrics use is available to a larger market.  According to this article in Security InfoWatch, “Biometrics is as an area that will inevitably gain momentum and focus in the broader access control market.”

Have you noticed any trends in the industry not mentioned here? I’d love to hear your opinion!
