FoodChain is a local non-profit company in Lexington whose mission is to provide hands-on education and training for area youth and adults around indoor food production and processing. Founded in 2011, FoodChain proudly hosts the region’s first indoor aquaponics system. What’s aquaponics you say? It’s quite neat. They grow fish, which produces waste. That waste is then used to fertilize the growth of leafy green plants. The plants clean the water, which goes back to the fish. Pretty cool right? Their next phase is to use spent grain from the brewery next door to grow mushrooms, create compost, and start hoophouses on their rooftop that can be used to grow additional plants. The final phase is to build a large kitchen used to process and prepare food, as well as to teach the local community how to prepare food.
They are currently in the process of building up their facility, and LockNet donated some doors, exit devices, and other related door hardware. We are proud to serve and support our local community and are excited about what FoodChain is doing in Lexington.
