I am a very active member of a local Facebook page that helps reconnect lost pets with their owners. This morning I saw a post for a sweet old lab that got out when a home was burglarized. The unfortunate reality is that home invasions are a real possibility and every one of us needs to be prepared.
I am continually amazed by the new technology on today’s market and, as luck would have it, there are some great home security innovations. However, some of these advances can also be used against you.
Home Security Innovations
Canary, the DIY Home-Security System
This product has to be one of the coolest home security innovations I’ve seen this year. Can’t afford a swanky alarm system for your home? Have no fear, the Canary is here. You simply set the small Canary pod in your home and it can detect motion, smoke, carbon monoxide, and many other things similar to traditional security systems…all at a fraction of the cost.
Put Your Keys In the Cloud – Your House Keys
Earlier this year, technology rolled out that allowed you to keep digital copies of your keys on your smart phone. Now, with KeyMe you can scan an image of your key into the cloud and download it at a kiosk. You can also email your keys to others so they can make copies. This is great if you forgot to give a copy of your key to the house sitter, but if the wrong person gets a hold of your key, it is a recipe for real trouble.
MIT Students Will Release Program for 3D Printing High Security Keys
Earlier I said that some home security innovations can be used against you. This is one of those instances. If your facilities are on a Schlage Primus key system, you will want to pay attention to how this unravels. MIT students were able to replicate Primus key blanks on a 3D printer.
Why is this such a big deal, you ask?
Primus locks are a proprietary key system where the key blanks are currently only available through Schlage. Unfortunately, anyone who is highly resourceful can now get a copy of your key.
What other home security innovations are out there? We’d love to hear about them in the comments!
I’ve fallen so in love with the cloud key. I’m the kind of person who forgets to bring her keys/forgets where I put them, etc…With the cloud key, it allows you to keep digital copies of your keys on your smart phone! How awesome is that!
It’s such a great idea and so handy if you’ve misplaced your actual keys. Glad you enjoyed the post!
