Door rust can wreak havoc on the integrity of your exterior doors. A few weeks ago we talked about ten ways to increase the longevity of your back doors. Today, I want to dive more into preventing door rust in the first place. Take a look at these pictures – all of this damage could likely have been prevented if the door was either properly specified and/or maintenanced. Replacing doors is neither cheap nor convenient; anything you can do to keep your existing doors well-maintained is worth your while.
FourWays to Prevent Damage Caused by Door Rust
- When installing or replacing, use a galvanneal door. Unlike other doors, galvanneal doors will resist corrosion if the paint is scratched (which let’s be honest – is bound to happen).
- Ensure there is a good coat of paint on the door at all times. If you see rust spots, wire brush them and paint over the area.
- Install a drip cap. These prevent water from getting on the top of the door and creating rust. They also prevent water from getting into the frame head if the seal between the head and the wall is compromised.
- Do not install kick plates, or large stickers on the exterior of the door. Anything that adheres to the exterior of the door can trap moisture between itself and the door. Not to mention, the holes put in the door to attach the hardware can potentially allow water to penetrate the door.
