The door to my facility is slamming even when used properly. Why isn’t the closer slowing the action of the door?
This is a very common problem with doors in high traffic facilities. The cause is most likely one of the following:
- The closer needs to be adjusted to slow down on the “latch” portion of the closing cycle. Many modern door closers have “swing” and “latch” control valves on the losers that allow you to change the rate of speed that the closer closes the door. Typically tightening in quarter turns will slow down the speed. While opening the valves in quarter turns will increase the speed.
- The closer may have leaked fluid and no longer holds the correct amount of pressure to operate properly. If there is fluid on the bottom of the door closer or on the closer cover, you will need to replace your closer soon. If there is evidence that the closer was leaking but has since stopped, the closer needs to be replaced immediately.
- It’s possible that excessive wind and an under-powered door closer could slam shut. Door closers should be the proper grade for the type of doors in your facility and the doors usage.
