Let’s talk about some hardware on this journey for knowledge, shall we? There are countless different options for the many pieces of hardware on your commercial doors. We’ll explore some of the door and lock terminology that seems to be easily confused.

Double Door Coordinators

  • ‘Coordinates’ the sequence of doors closing
  • Usually used for fire door applications or double doors with an astragal (remember? We talked about those in this post on Wednesday)

  • A decorative pull handle used on doors operating a lock that is mortised inside the door
  • Typically used on entry doors or decorative wood doors

Outside Rim Entry Trim [for a panic device, with or without a thumb piece]

  • A pull handle and locking cylinder used to operate a panic exit device for the exterior of the door
  • Usually used on rear exit doors or stairwell doors

Surface Mounted Deadlatch

  • Surface applied auxiliary locking device
  • Additional security feature
  • Often times these devices are customer applied and against fire code, especially if applied to an exit door
