How It Started – Caps for Carlie
A while back I wrote about the generosity of one of our LockNet employees, Lena Thornton. Lena has been a Technical Service Representative for LockNet since 2007. She and her friend, Tonya Bruner, organized Caps for Carlie in order to collect hats and t-shirts for children battling cancer.
Caps for Carlie was started because one of Tonya’s close friends is a sweet little eight-year-old girl named Carlie who is battling bone cancer. The drive was a huge success and they were able to gather 180 items to donate to the UK Children’s Hospital.
Lena said that while it was hard to see all of the children sick and in pain, she loved putting a smile on their faces as they got to pick their special hat or shirt. For many of the children, it made their day.
Carlie’s Crafts & Crayons Is Born
Well, the dynamic duo is at it again. After visiting all of the children in the hospital, they knew they could do more. When they asked the nurses what the greatest need was, the nurses immediately replied, “Arts and crafts supplies.” The children spend long hours in the hospital and can easily get bored. The crafts help take their minds off of the illness and treatment, as well as making it a bit easier for the parents.
Lena and Tonya have since created Carlie’s Crafts and Crayons. They will be collecting new and gently used arts and crafts supplies such as crayons, coloring books, markers, colored pencils, activity books, word search puzzles, non-toxic paints and glue, construction paper, and various arts and craft kits. They kicked off the Carlie’s Crafts & Crayons drive on a local news network last night.
How You Can Help
If you would like to donate to the cause, please send items to the address below by July 31st. Together we can make a difference! Way to go Lena – we are proud of you! I know all of the children will greatly appreciate your kindness and dedication.
