The 2012 changes to ADA Compliance were the first made in 20 years. Two decades worth of changes make for significant overhauls on the restaurant and retail industries. So what happens if retailers and restaurateurs don’t do anything to update their facility? ADA compliance is federal law and because of that a DOJ violation hoists a hefty fine of $55,000 with subsequent violations of $110,000.
Follow the good faith compliance efforts that have always been required under the ADA Standards:
- Identify barriers and remove them
- Include full compliance during renovation and new construction
- Ensure your policies do not discriminate against individuals with disabilities
- Don’t put displays, signs or extra furniture in an empty space or hallway, that space is probably there for a reason
