What Do Architectural Hardware Consultants Do?
We know the level of confusion that comes with door and hardware specifications. This is where an Architectural Hardware Consultant can step in and save the day because door and hardware specifications are their JAM. They’re trained on all the details of product applications, codes and standards, and functional proper knowledge.
They take several courses during their training that teach them how to coordinate hardware items and the options available to ensure door openings are code compliant. They can also help you select the proper products for each application.
Becoming an Architectural Hardware Consultant
You’d better be ready to go back to school if you’re interested in becoming an AHC. You’ll have to take 13 courses before you go in for the big exam. It takes two days to complete and you’ll have to create a detailed hardware schedule for 15 different openings and some of the openings will be electrified. There is also a section where you have to write a full three-part specification for the hardware you detailed in the schedule and, finally, you’ll have to answer questions on codes, standards, hardware application, and more.
Not an easy feat! Just rest easy knowing you will know more about doors and hardware than most people on the planet.

Hardware specifications can get crazy. (No, really. You’d be shocked at the ones we see!) That alone can make your head spin and if it does, that’s when an Architectural Hardware Consultant can step in and help. Because they’re trained on all things door and hardware, they can read these things and that takes the pressure off of you. They can review your building plans and provide recommendations to make your hardware schedule work for your facility!
