How To > Don’t Fall Victim to Halloween Crime: Increase Home Security

increase home securityCities often see an uptick in crime rates during the course of Halloween and, with the holiday right around the corner, I thought it might be best to give you a few tips on how you can increase home security without bleeding your bank account dry. It doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, most of the time, it’s very simple and very cost effective.

Now, if you’re dealing with a zombie apocalypse, that’s a different story, but today we’re dealing with regular humans committing crimes.

Increase Home Security

What’s Your Lighting Status?

The lighting around your home is essential to keeping your house safe from burglars and vandals. Well-lit areas are excellent deterrents for wanna-be criminals. While in the light they’re more likely to be seen, which is why it’s a good idea to place motion detecting lights around your house. These can be purchased at your local hardware store and can be installed on your own.

However, if motion sensors aren’t in your budget at the moment, solar powered lights are also a great option and are less expensive. These, too, are easy to install and can be bought at any local hardware store to increase home security.

Is Your Landscaping Up to Par?

I know.

It seems weird and not helpful… at all, but I promise it works! Think of it this way. Do you live in a ranch? If so, I’m willing to bet you have windows that are close to the ground. Windows can be the perfect entry into a house for a criminal and with no shrubbery there to thwart their efforts.

If you strategically place some rose bushes or other shrubs with particularly sharp leaves or thorns, you’ll increase home security all while adding curb appeal at the same time. Two birds with one stone!

Do You Have Deadbolts and Door Guards?

Deadbolts are a pretty common feature in nearly every home. If you don’t have them though, you don’t have to worry. These are very easy to install and don’t cost much at all. They’re also at your local hardware store so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding them.

Most people install the deadbolt and strike place and leave it at that, but there’s actually a way to make it even more secure. If you drill the cavity deeper into the door frame, you’re creating a space that’s better equipped to house the bolt. This makes the door less likely to be pried open.
