Fire Code Inspections are a pretty big deal. Not only do they catch you by surprise, but if you do happen to have some hardware not meeting code, they’ll cite you for it. This can result in some hefty fines on top of the costs accrued in rectifying the violation. But never fear! We’re here to help ensure you don’t trip up on any of these easily avoidable violations. (Keep in mind, your facility needs to follow the specific rules of your local AHJ. So check with them first, but this list will at least point you in the right direction.)
The Violations
1) Fire Alarms – Just like your smoke detectors at home, these guys need to be checked and tested on a regular basis. Keep a record of your tests and their outcomes. Trust us, that will come in handy later on.
2) Smoke Detectors – As we mentioned above, smoke detectors in your company are no different than those at home—they need to be checked and the batteries changed on a regular basis. Besides, your customers don’t want to hear those pesky beeps while they’re in your facility.
3) Pressurized Cylinders – If you have any pressurized cylinders in your facility, make sure they’re properly secured. (See? I told you these were going to be easy.)
4) Exit Doors – There’s a couple of things required for exit doors, to make sure they follow code.
- They have to be unblocked. Make sure you don’t have any boxes or merchandise blocking the exit path.
- They have to stay closed if they lead to a hallway or staircase. This stops the smoke and fire from entering escape routes.
5) Extension Cords – If it’s a device that’s permanently mounted, it can’t have an extension cord.
6) Exit Signs – Signs exist for a reason and your exit sign needs to be properly illuminated and working correctly.
7) Fire Extinguishers – Just like your smoke detectors and fire alarms, your fire extinguishers need to be regularly checked to make sure they’re in working condition.
How We Can Help
Not to brag, but our guys here at LockNet know what they’re doing. Not only do we partner with our customers to ensure all products meet fire code, but if you have a question about violations or prevention, we can help. We can also point you in the right direction on how to correct the violation. Each and every one of our technicians are very knowledgeable in local fire code regulations—you aren’t just talking to some Joe Schmoe off the street who thinks he knows about fire codes. Our TSRs, project managers, and estimators are all continuously trained on what is and is not allowed for special applications. Plus, we won’t give the go ahead to any tech to install something if it doesn’t meet fire code.
Fire code violations and repairs are time sensitive. We get that. We also recognize that communication is critical, so with our knowledge of fire code and the importance we place on communication, when it comes to fire code violations, you’re in good hands with LockNet.
