Entry Trim for Surface Vertical Rod Exit Devices

Excerpts from an Expert > Entry Trim for Surface Vertical Rod Exit Devices

There are, generally, two types of problems – those that occur so regularly you can rattle off the answer rather quickly, and although there are some derivatives that require additional thought, they are generally solved rather quickly. Then there are those that make you go hmmmmmmmm, I have no idea how to approach that. That’s when the brainstorming fun begins.

Everyone handles these situations differently, in general, we lock ourselves in the conference room and start bouncing ideas off one another until we hit a product or application alternative that is a possible solution. When the kinks and details are worked out, we apply the solution on site to make sure it will work correctly. It’s not unusual to see the tool bag on the ground and three or four people standing around observing their handy-work.

We recently had such a problem – installing surface vertical rod exit devices on a high security facility. This in-and-of itself isn’t difficult, but the kicker is they don’t want to change their keyway. So, what type of entry trim can be used to activate the rim mounted exit device AND accept a mortise cylinder? The entirety of our Electromechanical Solutions team as well as our resident hardware guru, Rob, locked themselves in our conference room on many an occasion to brainstorm possible solutions. Alas, after exhausting several possible solutions, we came across the Adams Rite 3080 entry trim.

ENTRY TRIM FOR SURFACE VERTICAL RODS – THE SOLUTION

entry trimThis entry trim provides outside activation of either narrow stile aluminum, wood, or hollow metal doors that have any type of Adams Rite Exit Device. A breakaway clutching mechanism protects the locked handle from vandalism or forced entry, in either direction. This also makes the trim re-handable in the field.  On a project with this expansive of a scope, that’s definitely going to be utilized.

All models share the same core components, so handles can be changed without having to replace the entire trim. If you’re looking for a product to integrate with an access control system, Adams Rite has an electrified version of the 3080 entry trim to integrate with cardreaders, keypads, and other access control devices.

You may be wondering – why does this particular trim work when others won’t? This entry trim accepts a mortise cylinder, which was crucial to the success of the project. Generally, the tailpiece of a rim cylinder is needed to activate the rim mounted exit device, but in this case there is a separate tailpiece to provide activation. The tailpiece is part of the device itself, therefor the mortise cylinder can remain in place and a new keyway isn’t necessary.

While these types of projects can be stressful, they are what LockNET thrives on. Finding a solution that you didn’t know existed and saving the day for a massive project puts a little pep in your step at the end of a long day.
